The club was originally formed as the Dominion Road Bowling Club at a meeting held in St. Albans Hall
on September 24, 1908 and was Incorporated on Dec 31, 1908.The opening of the clubs first green took place on Nov 9, 1909:
the clubs membership that season was 41.
In 1931 it was decided to change the name of the club to the Balmoral Bowling Club. At the same time
the clubs colours were changed from royal blue, black and white, to brown, red and gold. The change to our present royal blue
(Auckland Centre) colour was made in 1959. The clubs colours to this present day is maroon (wine), white and gold.
The clubs property was purchased for one thousand pounds ($2000) and the pavilion was built with voluntary
labour by the members. In 1945, the then President Mr Bill Rowland, engineered the purchase of a greenkeeper's house in Mewburn
Avenue, this was subsequently disposed of and the house at 11 Herbert Rd, purchased for the greenkeeper. In 1953 Mr W.E (Eric)
Cassels-Brown, Then the club Treasurer, helped by Mr Roy Hawthorne raised twelve thousand pounds ($24,000). This enabled the
erection of the present pavilion which was opened on November 8, 1958. In 1977 the extended lounge area was opened.
The club has had many members who have given outstanding service to the club. Mr Arthur Yeoman was
one. He was Secretary for 26 years (From 1910-1936) and also did the duties of club Treasurer.
On The playing side, the club has also had its members of distinction. Probably the most succcessful
of our players was Mr W.C (Wally) Franks who won two dominion titles, singles and as skip of the fours in 1939.
The club has also been active in promoting the social side of its activities.and has always recognised
the women's contribution to the club.
Our predecessors have left us with a great heritage. The challenge facing the present members is
to preserve and maintain what they have inherited.
